Gowan Company Announces Registration of New Rice Herbicide in Colombia

Along with its partner SDS Biotech, Gowan Company is pleased to announce Avanza® 400 SC Herbicide has been granted registration in Colombia. Avanza® is a 400 gram/liter SC formulation containing benzobicyclon, an HPPD inhibitor that has been widely used in rice in Asia for a number of years.

This is the first Latin American registration of a product containing benzobicyclon and it will be a key product for growers in this region. Avanza® is unique in that it has been shown to control grasses and sedges resistant to currently available commercial products. Avanza® is registered for use as an early season treatment in an integrated rice weed control program.

“Gowan is enthusiastic about Avanza®,” said Juli Jessen, Gowan CEO. “The new mode of action in rice gives outstanding control of a range of weeds. It will fit well for Colombian rice producers facing herbicide resistance.”

Junichi Takahashi, President & Representative Director of SDS Biotech K.K., said “SDS is very pleased about the registration of Avanza® in Colombia. Based on the proven benefits of benzobicyclon use in Asian countries and the Colombian field trials, Avanza® is expected to be an excellent herbicide for Colombian rice growers.”
